We’re Hiring: Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Specialist

The Huron Intermediate School District (HISD) is seeking a qualified Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Specialist to support students with visual impairments and other disabilities that affect vision.
This position focuses on helping students develop the skills they need to travel safely, independently, and confidently in school, home, and community environments. The O&M Specialist works collaboratively with families, staff, and community partners to support each student’s growth and independence.
📌 Position Overview
The Orientation & Mobility Specialist provides instructional and consultative services to students with visual impairments. Responsibilities include assessment, instruction, collaboration, and participation in evaluation and planning processes such as METs, IFSPs, and IEPs.
🎓 Educational Qualifications
Master’s degree preferred
Certification in Orientation & Mobility (O&M) required
✅ Minimum Qualifications and Skills
At least two (2) years of experience working with students with visual impairments (preferred)
Ability to pass and maintain a School Employment background check
Physically and mentally capable of rigorous work, including:
Sitting on the floor
Standing or sitting for extended periods
Lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds
Willingness to follow HISD’s:

🧭 Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Providing direct instruction in orientation and mobility skills
Assessing student needs and developing individualized O&M programs
Teaching sensory development, environmental awareness, and safe travel techniques
Instructing students in:
White cane use
Public transportation
Independent living and community navigation skills
Consulting with and providing training to:
School personnel
Families
Related service providers
Supporting student development in:
Communication
Personal adjustment
Prevocational skills
Assistive technology and low-vision aids
Conducting evaluations and preparing written reports for:
MET meetings
IFSPs
IEPs
Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and community agencies
Promoting student independence, self‑advocacy, and overall well-being
Using technology for instruction, data collection, and communication
Participating in professional learning and ongoing development
Following all applicable state, federal, and district policies
🕒 Terms of Employment
One to two days per month during the academic calendar
Occasional off-site travel with students
Position covered under the Huron Intermediate Education Association (HIEA) Bargaining Agreement
FLSA Status: Exempt – Professional
